2025 Conference

Seeds of Justice

On 14-15 August, seven Year 9 students along with teachers Lauren Marquet and Thomas Glenister, travelled to Anglesea for the second Seeds of Justice Conference for 2025.

The aim of this Conference was to:

  • raise awareness of key issues facing the protection of our Earth and what we can do to create change
  • deepen understanding of links between Eco-Justice, Spirituality and how our First Nations people connect with land and spirit.

The students were selected to attend the camp based on their written applications to demonstrate their openness to learning more about Eco Justice and commitment to participating in initiatives back at the College during Year 9 and their senior years.

The Seeds of Justice Conferences bring together students from Mercy Schools across Victoria, and sometimes interstate. Students and Staff from 8 different Mercy Schools were present at this Conference.

Thursday’s facilitator was Juliet Talarico from Terra Leaders. Juliet is a former Mercy Student (OLMC) and holds a Bachelor of Biological Science in Ecology. She aims to facilitate action and establish a world where humans, animals, and plants can all live in harmony. Juliet guided the students to challenge their thinking about our planet, how to care for it, and why this is an important spiritual practice.

The students were then able to reflect on these messages during and get out into nature on a guided nature walk with Juliet to the beach, where they were able to encounter nature for themselves.

In Friday’s session, students met Lisa Moloney, the coordinator of the Fire Carriers program for Catholic Schools. She helped our students to learn more about the program and how we can connect more deeply with One Nations People in our community and connect to our shared earth.

Thank you to the Seeds of Justice Committee for their work in putting together another great conference, to the students who opened their minds and participated with curiosity and determination and to Mercy Education for continuing to support this important program.
